About

hey,

Joey Malbon is bad/good

My life is music, film and photography. I am a lens-based media artist, activist-media scholar, educator, musician, event curator and broadcaster dedicated to amplifying my community and elevating my peers through inherent aesthetic and conscious design.

I am a visual storyteller backed by an MA in Comparative Media Arts from the SFU School for the Contemporary Arts (2022). My research focused on forbidden and illegal mediums including pirate radio and television. I envision how outdated modes of communication can be used as platforms for social change in a digital age.

While at SFU I worked under the supervision of Dr. Laura U. Marks as a research assistant and as an organizer and technical coordinator for the Small File Media Festival. I also created the embodied portraiture series Landscape | Interrupted as part of the 2019 Presidents Dream Colloquium on Creative Ecologies under the guidance of Dr. Denise Oleksijczuk.

During my undergrad I focused on the broadcast arts, founding the pirate radio station Fernwood Autonomous Radio 90.1 FM which was subsequently shut down by the CRTC. Following this I moved to Vancouver in 2012 to establish myself within the art and music scene. I perform regularly with my band, a creative outlet enabling me to explore creative techniques and experimental production.

I have worked with musicians, designers and creatives to share both their vision and my own. I have worked as a media consultant for the Skoden Indigenous Film Festival, operations manager for the Small File Media Festival, a guest lecturer on ecomedia practices at SFU, Langara and ISEA International. Prior to this I was a technical studio assistant for Paul Wong Projects, technical director for Pride in Chinatown and my work has appeared in CBC, The Vancouver Sun, Exclaim and Adbusters.

In my free time I am a composer, photographer and an active member of Vancouver’s music scene including event planning and management for both Partyfest and the Verboden Music Festival. I currently produce and host Oh No! Radio! on CJSF 90.1 FM, prioritizing BIPOC and 2SLGBTQ+A voices including those of JB The First Lady, Janette King, Missy D, Devours and Kimmortal.
